Spean Bridge is named after General Wade`s High Bridge, which crossed the Spean a mile west of the town until it collapsed into the river in 1913, rather than the more famous Telford bridge that crosses the river now. Spean Bridge is an attractive village,beyond the forests to the south are excellent views up to the imposing northern faces of Ben Nevis and Aonach Mor, plus the entire range of the Grey Corries sweeping away to your left. The views are still more spectacular from the lovely Kilmonivaig Church a pretty and peaceful oasis. And a little further north again, is the imposing Commando Memorial which commemorates the elite commando units who trained in the area during the second world war.
