YHA Black Sail

YHA Black Sail is a legend, famous for being a remote and isolated shepherd’s bothy at the head of Ennerdale, accessible only on foot. This location provides great access to the surrounding fells: Great Gable, Pillar, Red Pike and Steeple to name a few. It’s on the Coast-to-Coast walking route and is renowned as a base for enjoying the mountains of the Lake District.

Due to its location, luggage transfer is NOT available. Clients must carry an overnight bag and you will be reunited with your bags at your next stop.

YHA Black Sail has 16 beds. The common room is the hub of activity and functions as a lounge, dining room and drying room. This iconic hostel is only accessible by foot or bike, but remains very popular with adventurers! We have a cosy wood-burning stove inside, perfect for telling stories around or drying clothes. The nearest road is 2 1/2 miles away by mountain path. There are no credit card facilities on site so please bring cash. There are no electric sockets and mobile phone coverage is limited. The bedrooms, shower and toilets are all accessed from outside, so please bring a torch. Reception opens at 5pm however the common room is left open during the day for guests to use.

2 mile walk from the summit of Honister pass or from Gatosgorth in the Buttermere Valley.
