Mile 114

Consett

Consett is a large town with plenty of places to stay and eat. The town is perched on the steep eastern bank of the River Derwent and owes its origins to industrial development arising from lead mining in the area, together with the development of the steel industry in the Derwent Valley, which is said to have been initiated by immigrant German cutlers and sword-makers from Solingen, who settled in the village of Shotley Bridge during the 17th century.

Crown & Crossed Swords Hotel

Front Street, Shotley Bridge, Co Durham, DH8 0HU - C2C Cycle Route

Shotley Bridge is the place where steel-making started in this region. It became a spa town, and its prosperity has a legacy in many fine houses that survive. One of them, originally a swordmaking warehouse, is now the Crown & Crossed Swords, near the A68 and a short distance from Consett. Run by the same family for 50 years, the pub has a delightful traditional bar, an upstairs restaurant and 10 good-sized bedrooms for B&B guests.
